At Paris Fashion Week, people usually come to showcase a style. Then there’s Jaden Smith, who seems to have decided to show up… with his housing slung over his shoulder. Yes, the son of Will Smith, now apparently the creative director of “Loubou Catin.”
There he is, wandering between photographers and fashion editors with a house-shaped bag, like a conceptual snail dragging its miniature pavilion from one show to the next. The idea is no doubt meant to be avant-garde, almost philosophical, a wink at some grand real estate empire of a higher lord. But in trying so hard to turn architecture into something portable, one mostly ends up looking like a Muggle on a weekend getaway.
Paris Fashion Week loves provocation. It’s practically its signature. But between subversion and gimmick, the line can be as thin as a sandal strap. Here, fashion no longer just dresses you, it moves house. You can almost picture the moment he sets the bag down on the sidewalk, pulls out a set of keys, and invites photographers in for a tour of the living room.
Parisian fashion loves boldness, of course. But sometimes, in trying to wear a concept a little too literally, you end up simply carrying… the whole house on your back.
