CATE BLANCHETT AND UNIGLO

On 29 October, Uniqlo launched “Stories She Tells”, a project developed with its global ambassador Cate Blanchett, aimed at amplifying the voices and stories of women from diverse backgrounds. The University of Tokyo is the launch partner, and the magazine, which will bring together essays selected through an open call for submissions, is scheduled for publication in autumn 2027. As the brand’s first literary publication, it seeks to share a wide range of perspectives across genres and generations, encouraging new conversations. Unlike LifeWear Magazine, which focuses on clothing and everyday life, this new publication will give women the opportunity to use the brand’s editorial resources to bring their stories to a wider audience.

The inaugural issue will explore the theme of “Connection”, bringing together essays, research papers and literary works related to the subject. The call for submissions will open this winter, with Cate Blanchett chairing the selection process, while details of the entry requirements are expected to be announced around December 2026. Academics from the University of Tokyo’s IncluDE Centre will advise the editorial team on the theme and content, with plans also in place for jointly produced material. The initiative is subsequently expected to expand internationally through partnerships with other universities.

At the press conference held on campus, Cate Blanchett was joined by two female students, Kaori Hayashi, Executive Vice-President of the university, and the writer Mieko Kawakami. The project builds on the actress’s existing commitment to the brand. Appointed global ambassador in August 2025, the two-time Academy Award winner, who also serves as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, was expected to take part in initiatives supporting emerging talent, displaced populations, and environmental and community causes. At the time, she expressed her belief that major corporations have a more important role to play than ever before, and that Uniqlo has the potential to serve as a place that brings people together.
